Shocking Youtube video shows baby dragged into sea at Cramond
A baby in a pram was pulled into the sea when a young mum tripped over while walking along a pathway to Cramond Island.
Shocking Youtube footage – which you can view here - shows the woman and a friend pushing the buggy along the causeway, before plunging into the freezing water.
Luckily, the friend helps to pull the mum and child to safety, while passers-by are seen rushing to the rescue.
When s1cramond contacted RNLI Queensferry, which covers the Cramond area, they were watching the video.
Derek Sutton, Volunteer Helmsman at Queensferry RNLI, said: “We know only what we’ve seen from Youtube. We believe that it might have happened on Sunday (February 12), but we don’t know for definite.
“What is definite is that it must have been very frightening for them. The water looks about waste-level and it looks like a toddler or a baby in the pram.”
When we asked if the footage might be a hoax, Mr Sutton told us: “That was our initial conclusion but now, after looking at it, we’d say it’s genuine.”
Mr Sutton advised visitors to Cramond Island to be vigilant because the tides are known to be unpredictable.
He said: “The tide does come in very fast. It might go out and it might seem safe but then it comes back and that’s how people get trapped.
“Clearly anyone entering Cramond should look at the signs and if they are unsure when it is safe to cross then they are better contacting the coastguard. If they are in any doubt at all that they might get stuck, then I would never advise that they go ahead.
“It’s not the first time things like this have happened. It’s happened to families, children, dogs. It does unfortunately happen quite a lot. We’re called out to Cramond on average about 20 times a year.”
A spokeswoman for RNLI Scotland added: “People sometimes walk too close to the sea and we advise them to be careful.”
